Koh Lanta Travel Guide: Beaches, Seasons and Where to Base

Koh Lanta (properly Koh Lanta Yai) is the main island of the Koh Lanta group in Krabi province. It is long and thin, with a string of west-coast beaches, a fishing and Chao Leh (sea nomad) heritage on the east side, and a national park at the southern tip. Most visitors pick it for what it lacks: there is far less nightlife, traffic and high-rise development than on Phuket.

Areas and beaches

AreaWhat it is like
SaladanArrival pier and the northern town: shops, ATMs, tour desks and pier restaurants
Klong DaoClosest beach to Saladan, long and gently sloping, good for families
Long Beach (Phra Ae)Wide beach with a lively mix of bars, cafes and small hotels
Klong Khong and Klong NinSmaller bays with casual beach bars and more room
Kantiang Bay and BakantiangSouthern bays, quieter, with hilly scenery
Old Town (east coast)Stilt houses, seafood restaurants, small museums and cafes
Mu Ko Lanta National ParkSouthern tip with a lighthouse, trails and a beach

The west coast is where you sleep and swim; the east coast is where you eat and wander. Scooter hire is common, but roads are hilly and accidents are frequent, so only ride if you have experience, a valid licence for your insurance and a helmet.

How to get to Koh Lanta

  • From Krabi Airport or Krabi Town: Minivans run directly to the island, crossing two short car-ferry hops. Expect roughly two to two and a half hours (approx.), plus ferry waiting time.
  • From Koh Phi Phi: Ferries run in the high season and take around 1.5-2 hours; they often stop in the monsoon.
  • From Phuket and Krabi: Some seasonal boats serve Koh Lanta; others are replaced by road transfers outside high season. Check operators close to your travel date.
  • From Koh Lipe or Trang: Longer overland-and-ferry combinations exist; see Koh Lipe.
Tip

Book transfers to Lanta with the accommodation first if you arrive late. Taxis and minivans on the island are priced per trip rather than metered.

Best time to go

The best months for beach weather are roughly mid-November to April. February and March are the sunniest and calmest. The monsoon from May to October is the low season: many hotels, restaurants and boat tours shut or run reduced schedules, and some cheaper boats stop altogether.

  • Sea conditions: In the rainy months the west-coast beaches can have strong currents and heavy swell.
  • Closures: From about May to October, a large share of the beach-side businesses close for the season. Find out whether your chosen resort and the nearby restaurants will be open.
  • Tours: Snorkelling trips to Koh Rok and Koh Haa generally run only in the dry season (park rules and access vary, check official pages).
Heads up

If you travel in the rainy season, confirm that your beach has working lifeguard flags and that your accommodation is open. Do not swim in rough surf.

Where to stay

  • Klong Dao for families, easy access to Saladan and calm shallow water.
  • Long Beach (Phra Ae) for a social but still relaxed atmosphere with plenty of choices.

  • Kantiang Bay for quieter, scenic seclusion with a few higher-end resorts.

Top things to do

  1. Snorkelling and diving trips: To Koh Rok, Koh Haa and around, in the dry season. Check operator licences and what is included.
  2. Mu Ko Lanta National Park: Short trails, a lighthouse and a quiet beach; confirm entry fees on the official page.
  3. Old Town: Stroll the stilted waterfront and eat fresh seafood.
  4. Mangrove kayaking and longtail trips: Quiet, wildlife-oriented outings.
  5. Cooking classes and yoga: Several small studios operate, especially on Long Beach and Klong Nin.
  6. Sunset beaches: Walks and a drink on the west coast are the main daily ritual.
Note

Lanta has a significant Muslim population in places, especially in Old Town. Dress modestly when visiting local villages and mosques.

FAQ

Is Koh Lanta good for families?

Many families like the gentle beaches and slower pace, particularly Klong Dao and Long Beach. Check whether your beach has shallow water at low tide and whether your resort has a pool.

Can I stay in Koh Lanta during the rainy season?

You can, but many places close and sea conditions are poor. It suits quiet, flexible travellers more than beach holidaymakers.

Do I need a scooter?

It is convenient but not essential. Taxis and songthaews exist, and some beach areas are walkable. Roads are hilly, and you need appropriate insurance.

How far is Koh Lanta from Krabi Airport?

Roughly 70 to 100 kilometres by road depending on the route, with two car-ferry crossings. Allow around two to two and a half hours (approx.).

Is Koh Lanta safe?

It is generally calm. Take usual precautions, avoid swimming in strong surf, and keep emergency numbers handy: 191 police, 1669 medical and 1155 Tourist Police.
