Koh Tao is a small island in the western Gulf of Thailand, widely known as a place to learn scuba diving. It also has snorkelling bays, hiking viewpoints and a relaxed, casual atmosphere. This hub covers planning basics and points to the detailed guides.

How to get to Koh Tao from Bangkok

Koh Tao has no airport. You arrive by boat from Chumphon on the mainland, or from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Details are as of 2026, so confirm with operators.

RouteTypical total timeNotes
Train or bus to Chumphon + boatAbout 8-11 hrsPopular for Tao. Boats are often a high-speed catamaran or slower night boat.
Flight to Chumphon + boatAbout 3.5-5 hrsFlight options have varied over time. Check which airlines currently serve Chumphon.
Flight to Samui + boatAbout 3.5-5 hrsBoats run to Tao, usually via Phangan.
Flight to Surat Thani + bus/ferryAbout 6-8 hrsCheaper but with several transfers.
Tip

The Chumphon route can be quicker than Surat Thani for Tao in many cases. Book a through ticket with a clear transfer plan. See the ferry guide for the full network.

Best time to go

Tao follows the Gulf-side pattern, but its seas are a key factor for divers.

  • March to September: commonly considered the calmer, better-visibility part of the year, though showers happen.
  • October to December: wetter with rougher seas. Dive visibility can drop and boats may be cancelled. November is often among the weakest months.
  • January to February: variable, often drier but with some swell.

Whale shark sightings are possible but not predictable, and no operator can promise them. Check forecasts via the Thai Meteorological Department. To compare coasts, see Thailand best time by region.

Areas to stay

  • Sairee Beach: the longest beach and the main dive and nightlife hub, with the widest range of rooms.
  • Chalok Baan Kao: calmer, with a relaxed bay and a few dive schools.
  • Mae Haad: the port area, handy for arrivals and departures.
  • Tanote Bay and Freedom Beach: quieter and scenic, but hillier and harder to reach.
  • Shark Bay and Aow Leuk: small bays good for snorkelling.

Many dive schools offer accommodation packages. If you do not plan to dive, consider a quieter bay.

Top things to do

  • Learn to dive or snorkel: see the Koh Tao diving courses guide. Thai-language readers can use the Thai guide.
  • Snorkel at shallow bays such as Shark Bay, Aow Leuk and Tanote.
  • Day trip to Koh Nang Yuan, a small group of islands with a sandbar. A landing fee typically applies. Check the current figure locally.
  • Viewpoints: John-Suwan and Mango Bay areas are known for sunset views, but trails can be steep.
  • Rock climbing and hiking: some operators offer guided sessions.

Safety notes

  • Emergency numbers: 191 police, 1669 medical emergency, 1155 Tourist Police.
  • The island has clinics, but diving emergencies may involve transfer to a recompression chamber on a larger island or the mainland. Dive insurance and travel insurance matter.
  • Do not fly or go to high altitude too soon after diving. See official DAN and PADI guidance.
  • Scooter accidents are common on steep, sandy roads. Wear a helmet and ride only if experienced.
Note

Marine life is fragile. Do not stand on coral, touch animals or feed fish.
