Pattaya is easy to reach from Bangkok, but it can be confusing to plan: attractions are spread across the city and the countryside, the main beach is not the best in Thailand, and the nightlife reputation overshadows a lot of family-friendly options. This guide groups the main things to do by type, with timing, rough costs and notes for travelling with children. It assumes you are already familiar with the basics on our Pattaya hub.
All prices, opening hours and boat schedules are approximate (as of 2026). They change often, so check the attraction's own page or the pier counter before you go.

Koh Larn: the main island day trip
Koh Larn, about 7 km offshore, is the most popular outing from Pattaya. The island has several small beaches, including Tawaen (the most developed and the closest to the main pier), Samae, Tien, Nual and Ta Yai. Sand is generally cleaner than on the city beach, and visibility is better for swimming and snorkelling, although the Gulf of Thailand is not known for coral diving.
Getting there: ferries leave from Bali Hai pier in South Pattaya on a regular schedule, with a crossing time of around 40 to 50 minutes. A faster speedboat takes 15 to 20 minutes. Some visitors choose a private longtail or speedboat hire. Fares, first and last sailings and the exact pier details vary, so check the operator or pier counter on the day. Avoid unlicensed boat touts and ask to see life jackets.
On the island: hire a motorbike taxi or a songthaew to hop between beaches, or stay on Tawaen where sunbeds, restaurants and watersports are concentrated. The north-western beaches are quieter. Some beaches charge for sunbeds or umbrellas, and prices vary.
Go early, aim to return by mid-afternoon, and compare beaches rather than staying on the busiest one. Weekends and holidays are far busier than weekdays.
Jet-ski and parasailing operators at Pattaya and Koh Larn have a known history of disputes over damage claims. Take photos of any rented equipment, read the terms, avoid paying a deposit in the form of your passport, and use operators with visible licences.
Sanctuary of Truth
The Sanctuary of Truth sits on a headland in Naklua, north Pattaya, and is a large building made entirely of carved wood, planned in a mix of Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Hindu-Buddhist styles. Construction began in the 1980s and, by design, the work continues. Visitors walk through carved halls, view hundreds of sculptures and learn about the themes of the project. Entry is typically by timed tour, often with a hard hat, since work is ongoing.
Practical points: the site opens daily with set opening hours, and foreign visitors pay a higher fee than Thai residents. Ticket prices have been in the hundreds of baht for adults (as of 2026, check the official site). Allow around two hours. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), wear flat shoes and carry water because much of the visit is outdoors. Some sections involve steps, which may be tricky for prams or limited mobility.
Gardens, farms and wildlife
- Nong Nooch Tropical Garden: a large landscaped garden south of the city with themed gardens, a cultural show, and animal encounters. It is easy to spend half a day or more. Combo tickets are sometimes available; check the official site for current prices and show times.
- Khao Kheow Open Zoo (near Si Racha): a large open zoo about 45 minutes north. You walk or take the shuttle through enclosures with a good range of animals. Popular with families, and best in the cooler morning hours.
- Pattaya Sheep Farm and Silverlake Vineyard: small photo-friendly attractions on the edge of the city, usually visited as part of a half-day drive.
- Aquariums and indoor attractions: the city has aquariums and several indoor 3D or illusion museums that suit hot or wet days.
Animal shows and photo opportunities with wild animals are controversial. If animal welfare matters to you, choose venues that do not require direct contact or riding, and look for transparent welfare practices.
Temples and viewpoints
- Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Hill): a seated Buddha on a hill south of the city, reached by stairs and with a view over Pattaya Bay. Free entry, but dress modestly.
- Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain): a huge Buddha image carved in gold on a cliff face, south of Pattaya. It can be viewed from the roadside and is a short stop.
- Wat Yansangwararam: a large temple complex with Thai-Chinese design and gardens, a bit further south.
Visitors to temples should read the rules in Thailand temple etiquette.
Water parks and family days out
Pattaya has several large water parks, some with themed rides and slides that suit different ages. Cartoon Network Amazone and Ramayana Water Park are among the best known. Check height rules, the day's weather and any restrictions on bringing food. Family-friendly beaches include Jomtien and the north end of Naklua, though lifeguard presence is uneven.
For families with young children, build a day around one major attraction in the cooler morning and spend the afternoon at a hotel pool. Walking Street, in the evening, is not designed for children.
Markets and food
- Pattaya Floating Market: a built, tourist-oriented market with food and craft stalls arranged along canals.
- Night markets: Thepprasit Night Market (weekends) and Jomtien Night Market offer street food and souvenirs.
- Naklua Fish Market and seafood restaurants: a more local seafood experience, with fish priced by weight.
Street food and local restaurants offer meals at THB 60-200 per dish. Seafood and restaurants on the beachfront cost more, so check prices before ordering by weight.
Nearby day trips
- Koh Samet (Rayong): about 1.5 to 2 hours by road to Ban Phe pier, then a short boat ride. A national park fee applies; check the Department of National Parks for the current fee. Better beaches than Pattaya, but too far for a rushed day trip.
- Bang Saen (Chonburi): a weekend beach town for Thai families, with a simple seaside feel and seafood.
- Koh Si Chang: a small island off Si Racha with temples, caves and a historic palace site, reached by short boat from Si Racha.
- Bangkok: possible as a day trip by bus, but the journey of 2 to 3 hours each way is tiring. See our Bangkok hub if you want to extend.
- Further east: Koh Chang is a long day from Pattaya; treat it as a separate trip.

What to bring and safety
Bring sun protection, a hat, light clothes, a swimsuit, a rain layer in the wet season and a dry bag for boat trips. Keep copies of your passport and a small amount of cash for piers and markets. Check sea conditions, follow lifeguard flags and avoid swimming after heavy rain. In emergencies call 191 (police), 1669 (medical emergency) or 1155 (Tourist Police). Travel insurance that covers scooters and water sports is worth checking if you plan to use them. See also the Thailand safety, scams and health guide.

FAQ
What is the best thing to do in Pattaya with kids?
It depends on their age, but a Koh Larn day, a water park and the zoo or garden parks are common family choices. Keep each day to one main activity to avoid fatigue in the heat.
How do I get to Koh Larn?
Take a public ferry or speedboat from Bali Hai pier in South Pattaya. Check the day's timetable, especially in the rainy season when waves can lead to cancelled sailings.
Is the Sanctuary of Truth worth visiting?
It is one of the more distinctive sights in the region if you are interested in craftsmanship, temple-style architecture and Thai-Buddhist mythology. It is outdoors and involves walking, so plan for the heat.
Can I do Pattaya as a day trip from Bangkok?
You can, but the travel time is considerable. Two nights lets you do Koh Larn and one other attraction without rushing.
Is Pattaya safe for solo travellers?
Yes, with standard city precautions. Be careful with alcohol, transport scams and rented vehicles.
