Koh Lipe sits near the Malaysian border and has no airport, so every journey ends with a boat. That makes planning more important than for most Thai islands. The route is straightforward once you know the pattern: reach Hat Yai or Trang, transfer to Pak Bara pier, then take a speedboat. What decides your trip is the season, because boat service depends on the weather and on the Tarutao marine park rules.

The short version

  1. Fly or take a train to Hat Yai (or fly to Trang).
  2. Take a minivan or taxi to Pak Bara pier in Satun province.
  3. Take a speedboat from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  4. Plan the same in reverse on the way out, and leave buffer time.

As of 2026, speedboat service is most reliable from roughly November to April or May. Check the operator and the Department of National Parks for the current season.

Heads up

Speedboats cancel when the sea is rough. Never book a tight connection (for example an international flight) on the same day you leave the island. Leave at least one buffer day if the flight is non-refundable.

Step 1: Get to the south

By air. Hat Yai airport (HDY) has the most flights from Bangkok. Trang airport (TST) has fewer flights and a longer drive to the pier. Compare flight times with the first boat departure, which is in the morning.

By train. The State Railway of Thailand runs southbound services to Hat Yai and Trang. Night trains from Bangkok arrive in the morning. Book through the railway's official channels and check the current timetable.

By bus or van. Long-distance buses run to Hat Yai and Trang from Bangkok and other cities. Journey times are long, so a night bus or train works better than a day service.

Step 2: Transfer to Pak Bara pier

TrangAbout 2-2.5 hoursFewer departures
Satun townAbout 1 hourLocal songthaew or taxi
Hat Yai airportAbout 2-2.5 hoursMany operators meet the morning flights

Many operators sell a combined ticket for road transfer plus boat. This can simplify the connection because the van is timed to the boat. The alternative is booking the van and the boat separately, which gives flexibility but more room for mismatches.

Step 3: The boat from Pak Bara

Several speedboat companies run from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe in the high season. The crossing takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Boats usually leave in the morning and early afternoon, with fewer departures at weekends in busy periods.

  • Check-in. Arrive at the pier early. You will pay a national park entry fee if the operator does not include it. Check the official fee schedule.
  • Luggage. Keep valuables and electronics in a dry bag. Speedboats can be splashy.
  • Tickets. Buy from licensed operators on their official sites or at the pier counters. Prices vary by company and season.
  • Seasickness. If you are prone, take medication before boarding.

Approximate one-way boat fares are THB 600-900 per person as of 2026. Check the current price on the operator's own page.

From Langkawi, Malaysia

A seasonal ferry has linked Telaga Harbour on Langkawi with Koh Lipe in the dry months, taking roughly 1.5 hours. It is useful if you are combining Malaysia and southern Thailand. Remember that you pass through Thai immigration at Koh Lipe, and you need a valid passport and any required entry authorisation for Thailand, such as the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. See Thailand entry requirements and check the operator's schedule before booking flights.

Sample timeline from Bangkok

DayPlan
Day 1Fly to Hat Yai, minivan to Pak Bara, hotel near the pier or in Satun
Day 2Morning speedboat to Koh Lipe, arrive by midday
Last dayBoat back to Pak Bara in the morning, transfer to Hat Yai, evening flight

Some travellers do it in a day if the flights line up. It is tiring and risky if a boat is cancelled.

Budget

Combined van plus boat tickets often work out cheaper and simpler than booking each leg separately, but compare before you buy.

What to bring

  • Passport (you need it for boats and for any border crossing).
  • Cash, as ATMs on the island can run out.
  • Dry bag, sun protection and a light rain jacket.
  • Offline maps and a printed copy of your booking confirmations.

Safety

Wear the life jacket if the crew asks, and sit where the crew directs. Do not travel if the sea is rough and the operator advises against it. For emergencies in Thailand dial 1669 for medical help, 191 for police and 1155 for the Tourist Police.
